Before Your Appointment

8 Hours Before the Appointment
-
No food or drink (nothing by mouth) - Ensuring an empty stomach is crucial safety precaution
-
Exception: small sips of water is permitted for taking medications
-
If you are feeling unwell (fever, cold, sore throat, congestions), please contact our office immediately to discuss the situation and determine the best course of action.

Depending on what symptoms you have, it can determine whether the procedure should be rescheduled
-
Please inform the our office of any change in health as soon as you are aware of it.

Take all approved medications with a small sip of water
-
Avoid blood thinners, herbal supplements, or any medications that the anesthesiologist has not cleared
-
The use of any recreational medication (such as cannabis) is strictly prohibited one week prior to appointment
-

For pediatric patients, the patient must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to the appointment

Do not plan on driving a vehicle or operate heavy machinery for at least 24 hours after your appointment

Do wear: Loose and comfortable clothing with short sleeves

Avoid: makeup, jewelry, nail polish, piercings, contact lenses, tight clothes such as leggings, onsies, tight long sleeve shirts.

For children being treated, please bring a favorite toy/stuffed animal if desired

Bring a small comfortable blanket and a change of clothes
-
Highly recommended for all patients: consider wearing a diaper or disposable pull up underwear

Parents:
-
Please keep your child under your direct supervision to ensure compliance with NPO (nothing by mouth).

Do NOT send the child to school or camp on the day of the procedure.

It is highly recommended to NOT bring other children to the appointment
-

You will meet the anesthesiologist to review final consent and undergo a preoperative assessment
-
Important Reminder:
- ​Follow the eating and drinking instruction strictly to avoid cancellation

These instructions are not suggestions. They are the game plan imperative for the safety of the patient.

After Your Appointment

Drowsiness, fatigue
-
Foggy memory

Mild nausea or dizziness
-
Impaired coordination or judgement
-
Dry mouth or sore throat

Mild muscle aches or headache
-
Fever up to 101 degree may develop in the first 12 hours.

Nausea:

Avoid heavy and fatty meals ​

Keep all food and liquid at lukewarm room temperature
-
If vomiting occurs, wait about one hour to let the stomach settle before restarting with clear liquids
-
If symptom persist, please reach out to the anesthesiologist
-
- Drowsiness or Dizziness:
- Rest and take a nap after arriving at home ​
- A responsible adult should arouse the patient every 1-2 hours for the first 6 hours after anesthesia to ensure smooth recovery

​Headache or Pain/Discomfort Around Oral Cavity:
-
Take Motrin or Tylenol every 4-6 hours
-
Take oral pain relievers prescribed by your dental provider
-

Fever:
-
Rest and hydrate with clear liquids
-
Take Motrin or Tylenol every 4-6 hours​

If the fever remain higher than 101 degree for more than 24 hours after initial measures, please contact your anesthesiologist.

- Bruising at IV Site:
- Warm compress and monitor for redness​
-
Rest at home and limit activity level for the rest of the day
-
Have a responsible adult stay with the patient
-
Drink clear liquid such as water, apple juice, popsicle, Gatorade once the patient is home
-
After tolerating clear liquid, slowly start soft diet such as soup, smoothies, pasta
-
Take usual medications as prescribed
-
Do NOT drive, engage in physical activities such as swimming, bike riding, or operate machinery
-
Do NOT use alcohol, recreational medications, or smoke tobacco products for 24 hours
-
Reach out to the anesthesiologist with any questions or concerns (use the direct contact number provided to you)

For medical emergencies such as the patient becomes unresponsive or has difficulty breathing, please call 911 immediately
